The Society of Pilgrimage Studies, a registered academic charity, announces to hold the VIth semi... more The Society of Pilgrimage Studies, a registered academic charity, announces to hold the VIth seminar on the above theme and dates during the Ardha Kumbha Mela (declared by the State Govt. as Kumbha Mela, recognized as cultural heritage festival by the UNESCO), the most sacred and biggest month-long bath festival noted for catholicity at Allahabad. Ordered natural faith-scapes on cosmological principles are found in all cultures of the world. Geographical features-hills, water-bodies and sites-are inscribed by human minds to mark their sacredness in the form of landscapes and structures which have developed as objects of spiritual journeys over the ages. The seminar aims to examine the role of religious/cultural heritage sites, festivals and water-bodies in shaping the cultures and civilizations in the light of multidisciplinary and cross cultural interfaces. It will also focus on the insightful vision and experience of the sacred places and activities and awareness towards the nature-spirit leading to promote the pilgrimage-tourism and heritage preservation. Some of the chosen sub-themes are— Sacred water-bodies and death of the river Ganga, Kumbha Mela: the Cultural Heritage Festival, Pilgrimage v/s Tourism, Significance of Rituals and auspicious Times, Pilgrim Circulation, but scholars are free to choose a topic suited to the theme. Hospitality and lodging in the SPS camp on the Tulasi Road in Sector 07 of the Kumbha town spread over the sandy bed of the rivers in an area of 10 km. Vegetarian food and lodging facilities will be made available in the camp with a view to experience the earth spirit of the holy land. Only 30 participants will be accommodated in the camp. SPS will not entertain any request for hotel accommodation and rail/air reservations. Allahabad in on the main Delhi-Howrah rail-line and is connected to Delhi by a flight. Other nearest airport is Varanasi. The main bath day will fall on February 04, attended by 100 million devotees.
