While not necessarily the most interesting or controversial of mass communication theories, a series of scholars has advanced it during the past decades. The foremost gatekeeping scholar today says the theory remains relevant, and the emergence of “weblogs” has returned gatekeeping to the forefront of research considerations.

Weblog-driven stories before the 2004 US presidential election seemed to hint at the power of the “blogosphere” to set an agenda separate from traditional media outlets. More than 30 years of research shows that mass media clearly set an agenda in society.

It compares earnings releases issued by companies that recorded a net loss followed by a net profit in consecutive quarters during 2003. Also compared is a sample of companies that recorded two consecutive losses and companies that recorded two consecutive profits during the same sixmonth period.
