Among many other existing problems in cloud computing, we identified the lack of client orientation and lack of formal foundations as serious deficiencies. In this chapter, we give a summary on our research and discuss the architectures as well as the formal models of some software solutions with which we are going to address (a part of) these two problems in cloud computing.The solution we propose is a novel and uniform client-cloud interaction approach by which cloud service owners, who may be different from the cloud providers, are able to fully control the usage of their services in the case of each user subscription. In this context, any cloud service can be invoked by distinct devices; therefore, the content must be adapted to various channels and end devices, in particular with respect to needs arising from mobile clients. For a quick and seamless integration between the cloud provider’s identity management system and the system used by the client, we introduce the concept of a client-centric tool. An extension of the client-cloud interaction model enables client-to-client interaction (CTCI) in an almost direct way, so that the involvement of cloud services is transparent to the users.In this chapter, we propose a formalization of this solution that incorporates the major advantages of abstract state machines (ASMs) and ambient calculus by specifying the algorithms of executable components (agents) in terms of ASMs and by describing their communication topology, locality, and mobility in the terms of ambient calculus.

PurposeThis paper aims to tackle the problem of thermo‐solutal convection and macrosegregation du... more PurposeThis paper aims to tackle the problem of thermo‐solutal convection and macrosegregation during ingot solidification of metal alloys. Complex flow structures associated with the development of channels segregate and sharp gradients in the solutal field call for the implementation of accurate methods for numerical modeling of alloy solidification. In particular, the solute transport equation is convection dominated and requires special non‐oscillarity type high‐order schemes to handle the regions of channels segregates.Design/methodology/approachIn the present study, a time‐splitting approach has been adopted to separately handle solute advection and diffusion. This splitting technique allows the application of accurate total variation dimensioning (TVD) schemes for solution of solute advection. Applications of second‐order Lax‐Wendroff TVD SUPERBEE and fifth‐order weighted essentially non‐oscillatory (WENO) schemes are described in the present article. Classical numerical solution of solute transport using hybrid and central‐difference schemes are also employed for the purpose of comparisons. Numerical simulations for solidification of Pb‐18%Sn in a two‐dimensional rectangular cavity have been carried out using different numerical schemes.FindingsNumerical results show the difficulty of obtaining grid‐independent solutions with respect to local details in the region of channels. Grid convergence patterns and numerical uncertainty are found to be dependent on the applied scheme. In general, the first‐order hybrid scheme is diffusive and under predicts the formation of channels. The second‐order central‐difference scheme brings about oscillations with possible non‐physical extremes of solute composition in the region of channel segregates due to sharp gradients in the solutal field. The results obtained using TVD and WENO schemes contain no oscillations and show an excellent capture of channels formation and resolution of the interface between solute‐rich and depleted bands. Different stages of channels formation are followed by analyzing thermo‐solutal convection and macrosegregation at different times during solidification.Research limitations/implicationsAccurate prediction of local variation in the solutal and flow fields in the channels regions requires grid refinement up to scales in the order of microscopic dendrite arm spacing. This imposes limitations in terms of large computational time and applicability of available macroscopic models based on classical volume‐averaging techniques.Practical implicationsThe present study is very useful for numerical simulation of macrosegregation during ingot casting of metal alloys.Originality/valueThe paper provides the methodology and application of TVD schemes to predict channel segregates during columnar solidification of metal alloys. It also demonstrates the limitations of classical schemes for simulation of alloy solidification.

This study was investigated the mitigation effect of HA on growth, photosynthesis, water use efficiency (WUE), nutritional status and yields of salt-stressed cotton plants grown for two seasons at two different sites with ECe of 3.46 and 12.86 dS m-1. Each site was applied with HA at the level of 15 kg ha-1. The improving effect of 15 kg HA ha-1 was better in the site with ECe of 3.46 dS m-1. HA-treated plants showed improved photosynthetic efficiency, WUE, nutritional status, seed and lint yields and fiber quality compared to untreated plants. In contrast, the soil application of HA led to significant reductions in the leaf concentrations of Na, total soluble sugars and free proline. It has been concluded that HA has a pronounced positive effect on the growth, yields, fiber quality and WUE of salt-stressed cotton plants. This study aims to explore the sleep quality among a group of Egyptian truck drivers. Methodology A convenience sample of 117 male truck drivers working on Cairo – Suez highway was selected. Socio-demographic and occupational history were collected using an interview questionnaire and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) was calculated. Results The mean age of the studied drivers was 38.7 ± 9.7 y, 82.1% were married and 79.5% were current smokers. The mean driving hours per day was 15.35 ± 4.77, the mean sleeping hours per day was 5.8 ± 2.3 and 48 drivers (41%) had poor sleep quality according to the cutoff 5 for PSQI questionnaire. There was a significant difference between drivers with good vs poor sleep quality regarding number of cigarettes smoked per day, hours of work per day and mean distance travelled per day. The numerous additional mutations detected so far are all relatively rare, and about 30% of CF chromosomes carries unknown mutations in our patients. In order to identify the non-delta F508 mutations causing CF in our population, we performed GC-clamped denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) on 9 exons of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene in a sample of 86 Italian CF patients carrying unknown mutations on at least one chromosome. Direct sequencing of 17 samples showing an altered electrophoretic mobility allowed the identification of four new mutations (541delC, R347H, R352Q, and E585X), five mutations already known (G85E, I148T, G178R, 1078delT, and R347P), and one rare variant (1898 + 3A-->G). The strategy based on GC-clamped DGGE represents an efficient and rapid approach for mutation detection for those genetic diseases, such as CF, in which a large number of rare molecular defects has been described.
