Southsea Castle
Southsea Castle
Looking from the southern bastion across the north-west side of the castle. The lighthouse was built in 1820 and still functions today. Beyond is Southsea Common. When Southsea was being developed as a seaside resort in Victorian times, not building was allowed close to the castle as it was still an important part of Portsmouth's defence. Today's legacy is a wide expanse of green land used for public recreation and events.
