The first episode of the GL Thai drama Petrichor was excellent! Inspector Tul investigates murders with the help of Medical examiner Dr Ran.

It's actually sapphic (2 different couples-to-be) and much better than the forgettable Rizzoli and Isles. It has a lovely start (after the murder scene, I mean) with the radio announcing marriage equality in Thailand and Dr Ran catching the bouquet at a wedding between two men. <3

It's available legally and for free on iQiyi.

This video was a new vid idea this year when I did a rewatch for Falling Skies. I have another video that I started a couple years ago that I will pick back up again to finish it.

“Learning and memory are generally associated with brains and brain cells alone, but our study shows that other cells in the body can learn and form memories, too"

“The ability to learn from spaced repetition isn’t unique to brain cells, but, in fact, might be a fundamental property of all cells,”

this essay was originally posted on my personal site a while back - i hope syndicating it later isn't a breach of etiquette.

i saw someone on tumblr asking if you can experience “archetrope shifts” and it made me think. (by the way, if you don't know what an archetrope is, check this out.)

specifically, it made me think, well, that's like asking if you can be a teacher and have teacher shifts. there's certainly a mindset and affect that teachers have to develop, and that can come out when you don't intend it, like in all the anecdotes about people accidentally using their “teacher voice” with their friends. but calling that a shift doesn't feel like the right way to talk about it.

how do we talk about it, then? in the interest of following my own recent advice i figured i'd try and describe it from first principles. i posed the question to myself:

when you feel ‘more’ your archetrope than usual, what does it feel like?

Mary Beth and I went to see a production of The Rake's Progress by Opera Memphis and U of M. It was good, I maybe even liked it better than I expected. I went into it knowing it was part of Stravinsky's neo-classical period (his last work in that vein before, as I kinda recently learned, he moved on to serialism...I had thought he had ended with neo-classicism after his initial modernist stuff...I do really need to check out his serialist stuff). And then in the pre-talk they (our old neighbor Jeremy was there on the panel...he's a musicology professor and we've been to stuff where he talked about opera before) talked about how it was very much in the vein of Mozart. So I kinda had that expectation going in. And the Mozart stuff is there...and kind of in a way where he's taking a bunch of different Mozart operas and kind of blending them together. But the overall effect, to me, didn't FEEL like Mozart for the most part. There was a Stravinsky undercurrent of weirdness that was subtle but I feel there throughout most of it. It reminded me more of earlier Stravinsky than the other neo-classical stuff of his I've heard before. And then the content of the opera...it starts off in the vein of a typical morality play kind of lesson thing...but by the middle it starts to veer into absurdist territory and gets kinda weird and then the flow between sections is more and more nonsensical. And though it ends with a very traditional here's-the-moral cap off, it seems (at least that's how I interpret it) a bit tongue-in-cheek, plus every character seems to have a bit of a different take (except for Mr. Trulove who's just kinda like, yep, I agree with what you just said, Rakewell). Anyway yeah, I enjoyed it. Not sure about the crowd as a whole. We lost quite a few people around us during the intermission. Oh well, their loss...(I think!?).

Today I got up and went to Xanadu as they're having a final clearing-out-stock book giveaway. Friends of the Library had claimed what they wante (Read more)
Oh, yes. There's nothing like rewatching a movie you haven't seen in close to a year and suddenly remembering that you meant to nominate it for several exchanges that are already well past the nominations period at this point.

Oops? Maybe next year.

Note to self: remember that you want to nominate Strange World for both Yuletide and Holly Poly (Jaeger/Penelope/Sheldon) next year.

This movie has been hyped up for a long time for me. I was originally not going to watch it because I already knew the plot twist, but as I watch more movies I know that an ending doesn’t make the entire movie. As someone who has followed the Japanese and Korean idol industries over various stages of my life, this was an interesting watch. However, I would advise that this movie does have graphic scenes, including rape, which may be disturbing to some people. But for those who are okay with watching those, this is definitely an interesting movie.

Spoilers.

And also, while this was rather in Robert Barnard's general wheelhouse for the sort of things he was setting murder mysteries in, I don't think he was really going for the elite and great and good in the various cultural arenas he dealt with: ‘You should be afraid’: poison pen letters reignite UK actors’ fund feud (this has been a long-running thing).

A bitter feud that tore apart an illustrious actors’ charity has been reignited by the emergence of poison pen letters threatening former trustees. The annual meeting of the Actors’ Benevolent Fund (ABF) takes place on Tuesday after at least three years of turmoil with little prospect that it will pass off uneventfully. The ABF is a charity that dates back to 1892, created to help actors and stage managers experiencing hardship because of injury, illness or old age. Its patron is King Charles and its membership is a roll call of the some of the most famous names in British stage and screen. The fund has been riven by an acrimonious public row between long-serving trustees ousted in 2022 and “modernising” trustees who replaced them.
....
The letters are the latest twist in a saga that, if it were a television script, a producer would probably say: “It’s too complicated.”
....
The ousted trustees – several of whom are in their 80s – are angry at claims they were out of touch, saying they had developed their own modernising strategy for the ABF. They have in turn suggested that their critics have been guilty of age discrimination and accused them of acting dishonourably.

Do we envisage a dramatised series, somewhere down the line?

lly are. Hooray. This my friends, is the journey we are on with Mars. Thank you, Mars. 😊

Transiting Mars will be activating those Houses in your chart that are spanned by Cancer and Leo. There is something there that needs to be peeled back. Needs to become more authentic. Mars opposite Pluto gives great power and gravitas to this process. It is not a small thing for any of us. With Mars in Cancer, we are being asked to revisit our understanding of security and safety and to bring those understandings from an instinctual level to a higher intuitive understanding. With Leo we are being asked to know oneself in order to let go of oneself, to serve the collective from the Heart. Pluto will confront us with whatever is holding us back in this endeavour. So join us, and lets speculate and explore.

Eddie Kaspbrak came to with blood in his mouth and the worst fucking headache of his life.

Head swimming, he rolled to his side, coughing, blood spraying, but the horror of seeing so much red was distant. With a groan, he tumbled over the edge of the unfamiliar couch and onto the carpet, banging his knee along the way.

"God dammit," he muttered, drawing in a wet breath.

It came back to him in fragments. Richie's pale face swimming in front of his eyes, the echoing noise of the cistern, the howling of the clown.

This kills monsters.

Gasping, he bolted upright, pawing at his chest. His t-shirt was blood-splattered, a circular tear right over his sternum, but his skin was unmarred. No gaping wound. No fucking nothing. "What?" He whined, gripping the edge of a coffee table and hauling himself unsteadily to his feet.

"What the fuck?" He said again, turning a slow circle in the middle of a living room he'd never seen in his life. It was tidy, everything in its place, and if it weren't for his utter fucking confusion, he would've found something about it strangely comforting.

Frozen, he blinked at the front door. Jutting from it, just below the peephole, was the fire poker he'd hurled into Pennywise's razor-toothed maw. "What the fuck."

Shuffling towards it, he gripped the handle and gave it a hard tug. It didn't budge, the spade-shaped poker buried deep into fiberboard. He laughed nervously, then turned away, scratching idly at the filthy bandage taped to his cheek.

He was in desperate need of a shower. Preferably of the Silkwood variety.

In search of a bathroom, he limped towards the back of the apartment, eyes darting around the unfamiliar room until finally, they fell on a framed photograph propped carefully inside a tidy bookshelf.

From the photograph, Eddie Kaspbrak beamed. But not just any Eddie Kaspbrak. Eddie, as a teenager, his arms slung around the shoulders of an unfamiliar boy. Their faces were pressed close. Very close.

His heart thudded in his chest. He steppe (Read more)

So the hopefully final badge sale for SDCC next year is underway and my wait time is more than an hour, so I'm probably not getting in this time. Honestly, it might be just as well. Who knows how things are even going to be for me come the summer. My trip to PAX Unplugged and the live show in a couple of weeks, where everything has long been paid for, might actually end up being my last one for a while. I'm not even currently looking for resale tickets for the Fjord/Jester wedding live show, though I may closer to the time, if I feel I can go then.
Started putting together an ALA jobslist resume this morning, though I need to look up certain details for my current position. I had to track down my transcripts; they wanted my GPAs. I don't even know how much of my employment history to put in these things anymore; will anyone care about the college work-study at this juncture?
The trees outside right now are truly lovely. It's been alarmingly warm for much of the month, though it did turn very cold this weekend.

The last time I was down with a cold/flu type illness was just before COVID hit. I've been masking and isolating every since. I'm vaxxed to the max and all that good stuff.

I got that lung thing going around.

The first symptoms hit last Saturday when I was deep cleaning my room. There was a lot of dust and I discovered how badly my carpet was decaying. I pulled it out and washed the floor several times. There was a lot of carpet grit. My lungs starting hurting soon after and I developed a bad cough. I thought it was just the dust and dirt I stirred up..

My housemate had something similar starting the day before. She went to the clinic and was told to rest, rest, rest. I still went to work but was feeling poorly. By Wednesday I had to admit it was not dust but some kind of infection. I took some time off but still worked from home Although I have a fantastic trainee, there's stuff only I can do well so I really needed to do the work.

I've been trying to sleep more, nap more and do more fluids but I expect a long recovery period. Still, I've avoided most of the icks that have been floating around the past few years. It was only a matter of time before something broke through.
Hello friends,

I'm Pea, a 30-something podficcer from the UK 👋 This is my seventh year participating in Holiday Wishes, and I’m looking forward to getting stuck in! Thank you to anyone who grants any of my below wishes – I’m so grateful for the joy this community brings every year.

1. Stickers! I recently got into collaging and realised I’ll never have enough stickers. I’d love stickers of objects, flowers, Pokémon, food, words, cute things, animals, buildings, anything really!

2. Zines — I discovered the wonder of zines this year and would love to have more to read. If you’d like to trade zines, I’d be totally up for that too! My current collection is mostly one-page zines and LGBTQ+ related.

3. Gen 1 Pokémon Fic (that you’re happy to be podficced) — I co-ran an event this year called [community profile] pokepodproject. It resulted in there being a fic (under 1k) and a podfic (of that fic) for each of the original 151 Pokémon! There’s a treats collection too, Rare Candies, for extras, and authors who add their works welcome podfic for them. I’d love if there were more works there for podficcers to play with. A fic about any generation one Pokémon would be amazing, but if you thrive on prompts, my favourites are Magnemite, Chansey, Clefairy, Oddish, Gloom, and Vileplume! (PS: They must be newly written for the collection, so please don’t add older works!)

4. Comments on works in the PokePodProject collection— As mentioned above, I co-ran The PokePod Project this year. However, right at the collection reveal time, the Internet Archive went down - the site where most podficcers host their audio. It was offline for over a month. This resulted in the podfics in the collection getting almost zero response because nobody could listen to them! I’d appreciate it so, so, so much if you could show some of the works (both the fic and podfic!) some love. (All works are unde (Read more)
Read more... )

I keep having to quit watching midcentury comedies because you're being introduced in leisurely fashion to middle class characters you're supposed to find relatable and charming and they have multiple servants.

I just can't.

(The same thing doesn't apply to film noir and mysteries and thrillers and so on because these genres don't usually expect their characters to be charming and relatable to begin with. In fact, I often find these funnier than the comedies, albeit unintentionally.)

The edifice of midcentury white-collar jobs in the industrialized nations that created a huge balloon of suburban middle class with often multiple servants strikes me as in a way as peculiar, and as much a monument to the wealth extraction projects of colonialism, as those grotesque gilded neoclassical buildings that sprouted like mushrooms in the urban centers of the 19th century. That sort of lens is increasingly unavoidable whenever I watch or read anything, so it precludes even old texts being escapist in the sense of escaping association with unpleasant realities. But I find that genuinely old books and films are still able to offer an extra level of distraction because of their status as primary documents about the periods in which they're produced and the things you can learn about the past through them by observing. (The cars in old movies are great, and the architecture and interiors, especially little things like doorframes and light fixtures, are an unending source of delight.)
Hi all! I'm Lix, they/them, from Spain. This is my third year participating in this community, and I'm happy to tell you all that I am nearly two years sober now. I'm not going to say the laptop I was gifted that January was the reason for that -- the bupropion takes most of the blame -- but it certainly did not hurt. I'm less happy to tell you I still don't have a source of income, and I'm still living with my mother and her alcohol issues, and my sister and her increasingly awful behavior.

Still I persevere, and it hasn't been a bad year, overall, because I have wonderful friends and also wonderful games that keep me from wallowing all the time.

1. People to talk to on Bluesky. I'm Kivrin over there.

2. Art of my D&D characters! But please tell me ahead of time what your limits are for revisions and when they apply; last year I unintentionally asked for too much and the artist's response was very upsetting.

3. Recommendations for icon makers here on DW. I knew how to find icons of whatever fandom I was into at any time, but I've fully lost my connection to the icon-making, like, community. I'm particularly looking for 911 icons, but I also want just, icon makers.

4. Not sure how to say this, but... help figuring out what to do with my life. Now that I'm on bupropion I can probably do something, but I don't feel capable of holding down a normal job, and my blog is long dead. I don't know how to get back into doing graphic design, or what I could do with my photography. I certainly need a portfolio, but beyond that, I'm kind of lost. (And with that, I'm kind of stuck.) If you can help me figure out if I could apply for disability, that would also be good, because I keep waffling over whether my mental illness qualifies and/or would qualify to a panel of whoever decides those things, but maybe I should try anyway.

I asked you all to ask me questions! Here are the answers to some of them.

[personal profile] musesfool asked: If you could plan your dream trip, money and time being no object, what would it be?

I have an odd relationship to travel these days; I've been enormously privileged as far as it goes (depending on how you count, I've lived in three countries and been to 30) but post-pandemic I've become much more someone who wants to take things slow and close. I've seen more of the UK since 2019 than I had in pretty much the 20 years before that.

But also in 2019 I went to Japan, and that sort of lit my imagination. My friends and I went to Tokyo, Nagoya and Kyoto, all of which are on the island of Honshu and not that far apart, and that was great. But while I loved the cities, and loved being immersed in Japanese urban culture, we did spend a few nights in Hakone, an onsen resort town which while I was there was having a distinctively cold snap. What I would like to do is see Japan more like that: slowly, northerly, under snow and ice. Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido, the northernmost island, holds an ice sculpture festival every year which I would love to see, and even Tokyo in the winter was beautiful inasfar as I saw it.

Also I saw this picture and I don't think I've got over it yet.

[personal profile] sophia_sol asked: do you like birds more generally, or mostly crows/ravens? do you have good memories of particular times you've seen birds you love?

I like birds in general - definitely I much prefer a place with birds to one without - but corvids are my love! Not quite what you asked, but the ones I think of as "my" crows are such a joy that they cheer me up every time I see them. They live outside my flat, on the main road, which is a proper main road - four lanes of traffic, people, noise, lorries, constant disturbance etc. My crows like the bins. They like the binbags. Not the clear plastic ones; they don't like those, they know those are the recycling; not the big plastic boxes, they know that's the commer (Read more)
Sometimes I find it difficult to admit that I have been more of a pantser when it comes to some of my creative projects. I suppose it's because I've always been taught to plan important things from life-related responsibilities to treat them in the same way.

Perhaps, creativity doesn't really do that.

Even though I'm a slightly left brained person, I see why my right brain wants to not conform to the demands of logic all of the time. I tend to feel the urge to create something immediately, though logic and sometimes fear tend to stop me from following through. However, I shouldn't let perfectionism try to stop me just because I don't do something right the first time. I should try again until I get it right because I know I can be persistent to get it right. Still sounds perfectionist of me, but it can be the good kind that leads to the result I really want. I suppose that's why it's good for a creative person to create a lot, even if everything is not good quality. It's just progress made to get to what's better in the long run.

It's something I'm just really admitting to myself that makes me most comfortable in my element as a creative person, and I'm glad that it doesn't make me feel any less than an artist that I am. There's a place for planning for people to take me seriously, and there's a place for pantsing for my creative side to not punish itself but liberate it to do as it will. After all, these sides are reflective of God, too. Even he can do a new thing out of what's already in order.

(Read more)

I wasn't sure I'd make it to Clayfolk at all. The weather report told of a "bomb cyclone" off the Oregon coast, feeding into and "atmospheric river" over southern Oregon and northern California. I left town after the Club Mud meeting, around 1 pm, and drove into increasing rain, along with ominous LED highway signage warning that I-5 was closed due to blizzard conditions 155 miles ahead. Since I hadn't programmed my GPS yet--I tend to wait until the last leg so it doesn't keep interrupting my podcast with redundant directions--I know I should continue on I-5 south, buddy--I had no idea whether the blizzard was before or after Medford.

As it turned out, I was fine, no snow on any of the passes I traversed, just a lot of rain and a bit of wind, not really noticeable with as heavily loaded a van as I was driving. Got into town around 4:30, found my motel with no problem, and flopped on the bed for a nap. Had supper at a tiny BBQ place in a residential neighborhood where pulled pork and rice, with two sides, garlic bread and water set me back twenty bucks.

I'm working solo this show--Denise had a health issue that cropped up, making it impossible for her to wrestle boxes for restock, so we decided it made more sense for her to stay home with the kitties. She could have come down and stayed in the motel room--it has heat, after all--but that added layers of complication as well. So I call her every night.

Set-up went smoothly. I was down as soon as the building opened at 7 am, had the booth mostly assembled by 11, stocked by 12:30 pm, so I had my lunch, chatted with other potters, and sold a few things off-books to my neighbor's partner and another Clayfolk member who always comes in early to get first looks. (All permitted by our rules--we can buy direct from each other and knock off the 15% show commission.) Stopped at Harry & David to buy some pears and went back to the motel. My friend Carol and her two daughters were setting up her booth, down t (Read more)

R. recently commented on forecast wintry mix. We certainly had it this morning, not that the precipitation fazed our dog L. when I took him out this morning. He is more willingly wearing his larger jacket, which is an improvement given that he was initially trotting away at the sight of it, as a kind of gentle protest. The ground had plenty of icy wet slush. Drivers seemed cautious, perhaps with it being one of the first such mornings of the season.
I just had a shower - my first since Tuesday and OMG was it heaven and I smell sooooooo good.

The energy company is now saying restoration will be Monday at 10.

Myrna's better than she thinks she is. SHE"S STILL afraid to go to the bathroom without me nearby - she's afraid she won't be able to get up off the toilet but she does. This morning she was moving fine. I was in there for supervision only. She said 'will you get my ...' and I said 'nope. you can do it.' She looked at me and then laughed and said 'so that's how today will be, eh?' and then got up and got it herself.

Elbow coffee at 10.

More later.
The House of the Red Balconies by AJ Demas (Sword Dance, Honey and Pepper) was absolutely delightful! Hylas comes to Tykanos to build an aqueduct. He meets Zo, a courtesan of the "tea house" where he lodges.

As usual, this story takes place in an invented world inspired by Ancient Greece, and brilliantly mixes politics and domesticity.

There's major m/m and minor f/f. Zo has a disability with some good days and some bad days. He often walks with a crutch.

Okay, WIPs update time!

Motivation began to wane very strongly, but I'm chalking that up to "I podded like 25k in one week and got a little burnt out" and took a brief rest. THAT SAID, "i walked with you (once upon a dream)" is now fully done, and I'm posting the final chapter today or tomorrow!

I'm hoping that posting "So Wise We Grow" ch 2 pt 1 will energize me again too, so in that vein, the plan for today is to try to record some of "Do Every Stupid Thing". In theory, if I was suuuuper motivated and focused, I could finish recording the last 3 chapters, but in reality, we'll see. XD

I absolutely love this set because the whole concept is just such a great idea! I will have to play with these "runes" a bit to figure out what type of symbolism could be assigned to them in order to create a plausible (in the sense of: internally consistent) magic system. This is FUN! :D

Which I... fully forgot.

Have the Christmas trailer?

I was extremely worried but after nine days she is alive she messaged me and im so relieved and like after a decade of experiencing very intense relationships where they eventually leave i get to experience what its like when someone comes back and it feels extremely good.
Nem mennyiségre szeretnék tollakat, hanem néhány fajtát, amelyekkel régen írtam, jó volna újra beszerezni.

A régi Bic Rad Writers sorozatból rendszeresen felbukkan az eBay-en néhány használatlan, felbontatlan csomag. A Wavelengths variációk voltak a kedvenceim, de megvolt a tribális is :} Nem értem, miért nem gyártják már, iszonyat népszerűek voltak a suliban.
Csavarintós Styb-ekkel ugyanez a helyzet.

Tiny housemate remembers from the prior rainy season when I used a plastic broom to sweep water away from its collection point next to the heat pump condenser. The placement is coincidental; there's been a tiny pond every year due to an unevenness in how the prior resident laid concrete there, or had it laid. Anyway, though tiny housemate isn't a puppy anymore, chasing the very small overflow that ensues when I sweep the water away is still her favorite rainy-day activity, since she's damp already.

She remembers two things that're more useful, too. One is that if the weather is grey, going outside for as long as possible before precipitation resumes is a good plan. The other is that a rake and a broom aren't the same, and though she likes chasing both, she knew to keep more distance from the rake's tines as soon as I'd picked it up, though I haven't used it since January or so. The persimmon tree's leaves have begun to drop, and they're heavy enough to flip upwards with the rake yet land where I'd like them to, as a mulch contribution for the hydrangeas.

The hydrangeas, not edible by tiny housemate, were pruned piecemeal alongside the venerable fuchsia, which is, so that she'd have some twigs to gnaw on safely. Really piecemeal---on some days I cut two twigs, then went back inside. My current health status lends itself to unhurried walking in certain conditions but not to standing still, and my hands still don't have the capacity for things that they ought.

Roughly 90% of this year's persimmons left their tree a few weeks ago. Tiny housemate liked eating the ones she could reach, often after squirrels had filled up on them. Though my current hands can't manage a saw, my arms and core remain strong enough to manage a long-arm lopper for tree-trimming and fruit-harvesting. It's just holding a pole aloft steadily enough to tug a cord, with some nice safety features; I waved it and its peers around at the hardware store a few times before choosing one, to be sure that t (Read more)
I had an amazing time seeing The McAdo at The Gilbert & Sullivan Very Light Opera Company last night!
https://gsvloc.org/on-stage/
It is an adaption of The Mikado set in Scotland and they had lots of great gags - including at least one comment on how problematic The Mikado is in regards to racism. But all in all, it mostly the original operetta with just a couple changes to names, locations, and some small updates.
I have very high standards for my G&S and generally they did quite a good job.
The one choice they made that made me miss Doc was that they played Tit Willow for laughs - that Katy Shaw was entirely duped in to falling for Coco vs being inspired by at least one song of true emotion.
And one particular treat was that they had an actual live bagpipe player!
It was so nostalgic getting to hear 2 great things from my childhood in the same show: G&S and bagpipes!
Afterward I told a couple performers how much I enjoyed their work and then came back and asked for a photo with the piper: Bill Zadra. I can’t find a link to a website for him, but if you google “Bill Zadra bagpipes” there are plenty of videos.
I’d post the photo here but I don’t know how. I did decide to do a fb post bc it was easier to include the photo and… I might be starting to be back there more, while trying to not get addicted again.

Meh. Already yesterday I was feeling really tired, but I put it up to getting my annual flu vaccine on Thursday. That certainly will have been part of it, but I must have already been "curating" something else, for the lack of better term, because today I have a bad cold. And I can tell it's going to get worse because swallowing hurts a lot. I'll have to go through the box where I keep our meds, I think we might still have COVID test kits, though I really hope it's not that. :/

Whatever it is, it's kept me from doing anything worthwhile all day. I'm really close to finishing my self-indulgent little story, but I don't even know if I'll find the strength to write at my usual time in the evening. I don't know about you, but I tend to get a bit whiny when I'm sick and this last chapter of my story should actually be lighthearted and optimistic. The last thing I need is for my mood to influence my writing. oTL
We'll see. I'll take a hot bath in an hour or so, maybe that'll help enough that I can write at least a few paragraphs tonight.

Since I've got nothing else to say, here have a screenshot of my Genshin roster:

It's obviously not all characters, but all those lvl 70+. Those who are 70 I still indend to get to 80, but as I've mentioned before, I'm out of levelling books, so it'll take a while to achieve that. My main priority is Lyney now, because I'm really itching to play him already.

All in all, I'm really happy with my roster and can't wait for Zhongli to join the family. :3

On last thing, I finally got that last star in the Abyss today. All thanks to Ororon and, of course, my MVP Kinich. <3 Now I can rest easy until the new IT on the 1st.

Housework is definitely no fun- yet I spent most of the day doing it. The bathrooms were my business, that's why my fingers have started another row of blisters. Yes, I know, there's rubber gloves available, but by using them I'd get blisters, too, because until now I haven't found a brand I am not allergic to some of the substances. Good thing was that I did not have to cook lunch because of the sausages hubby brought for yesterday's lunch. So we had the creamy gnocchi with chicken Italian style. After napping- I really did nap this time- son number four, who had arrived yesterday evening, and I did Malakofftorte a la MiL, sans butter (yuck, again, even though I love butter) but quark instead. Hubby insisted on a big one, so we sent him off to buy more biscotti. The red currant cake I will do tomorrow morning, it tastes best baked freshly. Sacher torte got made by our favourite cake shop. Son and I also did more Christmas decorating- more baubles, straw stars and the like. The Wachs-Christkindl, decapitated and poorly pieced together, had to go this year, no matter how dear it had been to us once. No more Christwittchen in a glass coffin, I put our tiny old family naivity into the glass box instead.
Daughter sent me a picture- she is at the comic con in Vienna today but will take the train back in the evening. To her astonishment she got the four days around Christmas she had applied for leave approved. In compensation she has to do four early shifts before her leave will start- I fear that tree decorating will get done by us half asleep this year . Hubby will only be allowed to do the tree top- last year he smashed too many baubles, and believe me, I love my baubles! I am already contemplating a smaller tree- two metres instead of two fifty should be enough! BTW, the Christmas tree stalls have opened up already, and people are buying! Strange new world! When I was a child we bought the tree a few days before Christmas. I will always remember the one Christmas (Read more)

My shoulder is on the way to its former self- slowly, but still! During those last days I haven't been able to disrobe the usual way but had to resort to the mannish way of getting rid of my sweaters. That's why I know now why outer garments of females always have to get turned inside out (outside in) before washing, or one will have to wrestle a wet garment into the right shape before hanging it on the drying rack. Men do not have this problem. Now I wonder who showed my sons how to mannishly handle a sweater! Definitely not me, because I am female. And husband mine has not been seen undressing the boys that often...
Tonight I woke at 2:30 and decided to get up half an hour early. Daughter did the same, we had two coffees each, did crossword puzzles then de-iced the car and were off. It's peaceful driving in the dark and watching the first Christmas trees lit in the front yards. I love this time of the year, even at three thirty in the morning! Today we had the boys for an overnight stay. Husband mine picked their mummy up then went for the two then brought mummy to the Flix Bus station. It takes six hours to Venice by bus and eleven by train, because the route for the train is way longer now since the Tauerntunnel got closed because of repair work!
The afternoon got spent with crafting. Cassian helped me with the new, improved Wichteltür. Flavius was allowed to apply the glue only. The younger of the two is a very talented saboteur of craftwork! It did not turn out exactly the way I wanted, but the boys were happy. After painting and glueing hubby brought the Playmobil down from the closet, one of the few places the grandchildren save for Oscar aren't able to reach. Neither hubby nor I are interested to clear Playmobil away twice or thrice a week! Worst job ever!
This night will be challenging- it's the third early shift in a row, but the first with Cassian in the guestbed in the studio and hubby and Flavius down in the guestroom. Daughter suggested to wak (Read more)

I love female characters in general, but the more bastard and mean they are, the more I love them. This doesn’t mean I don’t like nice ones of course (just look at my obsession with Aigis) but since they usually make women all complacent, a change of pace is fun. I think it's funny when they commit crimes.

So I felt like making a list of my favorite girlies. One per series, the list is very small right now but I hope it will grow (and I’m sure I’m forgetting one or two)

Yuka Ayase (Persona)
All girls in P1 are a powerhouse & I know people have Yukari as the Mean Girl (tm) of Persona/SMT, but that's just because they haven't played Persona 1 (and because they look up memes instead of playing the games, Yukari is nice)
Ayase spend 3 whole dialogue boxes insulting the principal, summons her persona by saying "Personya", stole guns, has a situationship with another girl, her reaction to going to hell was "So freaky!!", rejected a guy so hard he exploded and only looked for a boyfriend so she didn't have to work. This girl KNOWS what she wants.

Coco Atarashi (TWEWY)
When it comes to TWEWY, I only have played the original DS version and did so completely blind. After finishing it, one day I was bored and scrolled thru the wiki, noticed a cute pink character I had never seen before, I started to read her page and..
"In the finale, a different side of Coco's personality is revealed. She is depicted as being highly manipulative, lying (..) for the entirety of A New Day, and being devious, disrespectful, and sarcastic."
I don't think I have to say I fell in love the second I read it. I feel so BETRAYED she was only in the ports lol.
I finally could met her in NEO, where she has an even cuter design. She's an angry chiwawa in human form, talks in an overly cutesy way (internet speak in ENG?), necromancer and killed a guy to save her girlfriend. #Feminism

Background & Introduction

I created Qitiniasaaq in 2016, sometime after I'd created Kitlinar. It's less complete than Kitlinar, since the first version of The Gate at the End of the World only had one Qitiniina character and the Qitiniasaaq language wasn't spoken.

A map of the Arctic, showing the lands where Kitlinar and Qitiniasaaq are spoken.

I never bothered creating any specific dialects for it like I did with Kitlinar, even though it'd likely have many more dialects. I guess what I'm describing here is the Kuulitaisaa dialect.

You may have assumed that this language has some phonological and orthographical influences from the Inuit languages, and you'd be correct. It also has some inspirations from Finnish - primarily in the number of cases it has.

Consonants

[ɴ] is an allophone of /n/ and only occurs at the end of words.

  • Nasals: m n ŋ (ɴ)
  • Stops: p t k q
  • Fricative: s
  • Approximant: l j

Vowels

Vowels are either long or short. Diphthongs are the same.

  • Close: i iː u uː
  • Open: a aː

Syllable Structure and Stress

Syllable structure is CVC, where:

  • C = any consonant
  • V = any vowel or diphthong

The majority of syllables are CV, with CVC syllables mainly occurring word-finally.

Primary stress usually falls on syllables with long vowels.

Orthography

qitiniasaaq orthography

Pronouns

Qitiniasaaq didn't even have any pronouns until I started cleaning up all my notes a couple of months ago. That's how little grammar I made for this language - it's basically a glorified naming language!

As a result, the pronoun system is fairly standard and boring:

  • 1st person: liin, liinik
  • 2nd person: sana, sanamik
  • 3rd person: main, mainik

Nouns

Nouns are marked for case & number. They can also take on a demonstrative determiner as an interfix. Adjectives are fused onto the end of the noun, and any noun can be used as an adjective without any modification - tilcan mean both "ice" and "icy

There hadn't been any servants around this morning, so Thor had had to get himself ready with the advice, if not assistance, of what he had decided was not a dread spirit but rather his imaginary friend Don.

Despite finding being relegated to imaginary friend status kind of hurtful (though he found tiny Thor adorable and hoped someone got pictures), Don, not trusting tiny Thor in the kitchen at all, had directed him to the bakery, and so there was a tiny prince of Asgard inspecting the baked goods on display thoughtfully, trying to pick the very best one(s) with which to break his fast.

I don't suppose you can lift Mjolnir like this. Actually, from what Don remembered of its history, Mjolnir shouldn't have existed yet, but Thor didn't bat an eye at the question.

"Oh, no. I'm probably centuries off from that."

Great. Maybe it wouldn't last long? What about the blueberry muffin?

"Hmmmmmm..."

J,GoB is open, and currently hosting a very small prince of Asgard and his 'imaginary friend' for breakfast.

Kissed by a Goddess: A Slight Misadventure

While the thing that had drawn Drizzt up toward Icewind Dale initially had been potent enough he called not for his brothers, but for his aunts, he hadn't gotten to see much of the region. It was a small risk to go into a place that was lacking in the great forests that his Lady claimed, but the lure of unexplored lands was too strong for him. He had no interest in dealing with the people, but he wanted to see the wilds!

This second trip up was in the height of their summer, and he was lazily gliding, just looking at the difference in the landscape from the earlier desperate fight against the wizard Akar Kessel and his minions in the Crystal Tower. He was still so thankful the wizard had been so small-minded, that he had not yet enslaved the humans of the region.

When he landed to investigate the plant life more closely, he did keep his senses turned outward. That was what allowed him to meet the first rush of the Uthgardt that had, for some reason, deemed him a worthy foe. He even knew when the second half set to trying to encircle him. Knowing he did not have to fight grounded opponents who merely sought violence, he cleared a wide enough space to launch himself skyward, his wings buffeting the fighters too close to him.

He got above their heads, swept down with his wings again, batting a hastily thrown spear aside…

…and a claw-laden weighted net managed to land mostly on his wings

After no rain for nearly a month, we now have three straight days of rain. Thursday was the big soaker, Friday and Saturday have been mixed sun, clouds, showers. Friday morning was clear so the feeders and ground were very busy with House Sparrow, Downy woodpecker, Chickadee, White-breasted Nuthatch, Red-Bellied Woodpecker, Tufted Titmouse, Blue Jay.

WEEK OF Nov 18-25, 2024

Live long and prosper! I've adopted this as my favorite salutation lately.  It has become all too clear that not everyone lives long and there have been too many of my friends and community and loved ones who have left us behind and I've realized how much emptier it leaves my world. I've seen too many friends struggling to get along in a larger society that isn't always accepting. I really, truly, sincerely wish you all long happy lives and prosperity in the world.

That said, this week I've continued moseying along, taking more baby steps, working on improving my own state of prosperity. I spoke with someone at All American Title who referred me to the Minnesota Uniform Conveyances site for templates, and had a long phone chat with Marty, going over the details for our deal. I feel relieved to have set a date for filing the mortgage doc with the county.

I've visited Terry a couple times again this week and she's in good spirits. She (I surmise) removed the bandage from her dislocated finger. She doesn't appear to be in much pain, but needed both hands to lift her coffee cup.

My Blue Cross Advantage plan put me in touch with a Friendly Helpers program of Lutheran Social Services who sent me a helpful visitor, Jamie, a very nice young woman whose own cat is apparently very similar to Rajesh - and she did some vacuuming for me! Seriously; it's been months since I've attempted to deal with my couple of rugs. She also swept and brought up enough clumps of cat hair to make another pair of cats.

I'm feeling very thankful today for friends and social services and pray to heaven that the new regime does no damage to Social Security and other programs that help people in need.

Mom is back to acting like everything's fine again, like she didn't just tell me last night that all my mental illnesses and brain conditions (and PHYSICAL conditions) aren't valid. I don't know how she can do that, just bounce between extremes like she does. Sometimes I wonder if she has something going on mentally, too, but I don't dare bring that up because she would FREAK OUT.

It's not very obvious to me that I've not just worn out my welcome here with Lee, but with Mom as well, and there's literally nothing I can do about it until they reach my name on the subsidized housing list. I'm trapped here and I hate it. I hate being such a burden on my parents, and apparently that's exactly what I am at this point.

I do my best to mitigate it, I spend as much time locked away in my room as I can so I stay out from underfoot, I JUST let them throw away all my boxes for packing if I DO get a place to move to at some point because they were in the way of the sewing desk that Mom for some reason felt the need to bring back from Grandma's, even though she's never going to use it. When I cook I cook bland as fuck food with NO taste because they can't handle "spice" (read as: flavor) AT ALL, especially Lee.

But mostly, yeah, I live in my bedroom because it's the only place I feel safe and like I don't have to walk on eggshells and watch every single word that comes out of my mouth. It's no way to live, but it's what they've reduced me to.

So... yeah. Good times. And then they wonder why I'm depressed.
Ooops late post this week, I went back to work on Monday and promptly got eaten alive by work. Anyway, it's the end of week three of the challenge, how goes it for all of you? Hope you've all had a better reading week than I have… I don’t think I read a single page…

Are we starting to flag a bit as November grinds on or have we triumphs to share? Anyone defeat a book that's been taunting them for long and weary? Share your reading triumphs and disasters in the comments below.

Continuing my pattern of reading nothing unless it's an autobiography, I bought this today:

Can't wait for all the hot gossip.
Mr Palfrey of Westminster
This is a delightful little series from the 80s about the eponymous Mr Palfrey, who runs counter-intelligence operations in London, with weird complex little plots and layered stories and moral ambiguity galore. There are three major characters: Mr Palfrey himself, his new boss known only as The Co-Ordinator who is clearly self-consciously modelling herself on Thatcher and who is exactly as ruthless and bureaucratic as you'd expect someone running counter-intelligence to be, and Blair, who works for Mr Palfrey doing the bits of intelligence work that are more energetic or violent rather than the bits that involve careful questioning and analysis which is what Mr Palfrey excels at. It hooked me immediately with the first real episode, in which a clash between Mr Palfrey's stubborn integrity and the Co-Ordinator's realpolitik leads directly to an innocent man's death, and I enjoyed the entire thing. It's not an action show at all, there are a few moments of violence and activity but mostly it's investigation and clever questioning and making connections and gradually uncovering the truth. I loved Mr Palfrey's style of quiet, independent-minded and determined investigation and how he never stops at the easy answer. A very good show.

The Sandbaggers
If you like realistic spy stories, run, do not walk, to find a copy of this. It was made in the 70s and I am told you can find it on youtube, I'm watching it on dvd and am just starting series three. It's about the Sandbaggers, the special operatives of SIS who do the James Bond stuff only with way less glamour, tight budget constraints and so much bureaucratic infighting. But they do have a licence to kill, sort of. When a KGB agent in Bulgaria wants to defect, or a senior civil servant is kidnapped in Brussels, the Sandbaggers go to sort it out, while also trying to avoid having their budget cut or letting MI5 pull one over on them. The main character is Neil Burnside, who runs the department, who i (Read more)
Is there an hidden rule saying that if South Korean have sex than there is no Happy Ending? Love in the Big City starts with a firecracker, young and healthy boy enjoying their gay life. It has also at least four prospective good romances, but nevertheless they ends all alone... Why? why you have to use handsome and good actors, a director who isn't scared to show some real sex happening, four, and I say FOUR, potential good stories, an not even one small happy ending? I know, I know, this is adult stuff, mainstream stuff, but again, are we saying that romance is not mainstream? that if they are happy than it's not a highbrow story worthy of a good production? I'm deeply disappointed. Ok, you can have a try, it's indeed good, but I wanted my romance. You can see it on Viki. Heat Level: 5/6.

Heat Level:
1/6: glances, caress, hugs, no kisses
2/6: kisses, closed mouth or camera angles
3/6: full kisses, clothes on
4/6: full kisses, some clothes off, hands above the waist, pants stay on
5/6: most clothes off, they have sex, but it’s masked, no sexy sounds
6/6: full nudity mostly hidden by camera angles, they have sex, sexy sounds

The Question

Erm, well – I begin, shifting nervously in my chair –
if it’s true there is no heaven and no hell,
no eternity or long hereafter,
no divine plan or offstage direction from an invisible hand,
then how do we make sense of it all,
how do we make our way through this life,
this glorious, ridiculous, ramshackle world of ours,
with its wars and brutality, conflicts and petty arguments,
the ten thousand tiny acts of kindness
which happen unnoticed before breakfast,
and all that love and pain, happiness and loneliness
that comes to us unannounced, by turns,
as if we ourselves were pitched daily
onto the waves of one of its vast, mysterious oceans,
not knowing whether today is the day we drown
or we find ourselves washed up
on some strange but friendly shore?

Mmm – you say, after a lengthy silence –
what I meant was … do you have any questions
about the job?

Good morning, dear listeners, or at least those of you who are still able to operate electronic devices this morning, as I have no idea at what age children learn that sort of thing. The squirrels indicate it is perhaps quite young. Well! I am Miss Lydia Bennet, and this is the news.

We begin with the school, where Miss Smith told her Weird, Wonderful, and Doubleyou-Tee-Eff students about the origins of the upcoming holiday, and Miss Belova shared her preferences regarding 'cranberry sauce.'

No notes for the dorms, thank you, so we move along to the town, where at Needful Things Dr Quinn tended to some minor tasks before she decided to visit the local tattooist, and then Pick Your Poison, where Dr. Isley considered giving her affianced some fertilizer (as he is currently a plant, you see), before Dr. Quinn stopped by to settle an argument--happily for all parties, it sounds--and tell her about her child on the mainland. I'm not sure I should have announced that to the entire island, but there you go. At The Magpie Emporium, Sir Graham was trying to decide between card games, whilst at Plant Parenthood Miss Zarrin was working with lemon verbena--a most useful plant! At the Trooper Station, it seems that Detective Watts's arm pained him, but it did not stop him enjoying his luncheon with Mr. Grant, and at The Ink Spot, Captain Flint enjoyed a book by the fireplace, which is where Fordyce's Sermons should-- Ahem. Moving along, Miss Skywalker did some inspection of her warehouse, where she was joined by Dean Skywalker, who inquired after the woodchucks before discussing the weather. And finally, at the boarding house, Mr. Kestis prepared 'chili, which I believe to be some horrid concoction of peppers, and Miss Finch--oh, Arden, really? I shan't be reading that. Miss Finch inquired after bread. There. That's all of my notes. Hopefully the next time I see most of you you shall be your normal sizes again and have come to your senses. Farewell, dear listeners!

Hi Everyone!

This is your check in for the splendiferous Saturday 23rd November. Have you found something to declutter? Made a plan that you can implement later? What is today's decluttering win?

Open to regulars, drive by commenters, and lurkers alike!

Nothing finished this week, nothing started. Currently reading is at 44 of the desired <20.

and in a separate category, 'I keep rereading this section, because I keep forgetting it' - Focusing by Eugene Gendlin. I actually want to be able to implement the approaches discussed and see if I can use it as a way to work through some of the mess in my head. I've managed to get it to work as expected once, while working through this section, so I have hopes that it will work.
