About Us

ChemSpider is a free chemical structure database providing fast access to over 120 million structures, along with properties and associated information. By integrating and linking compounds from hundreds of high quality data sources, ChemSpider enables researchers to discover the most comprehensive view of freely available chemical data from a single online search.

Since 2009, ChemSpider has been owned by the Royal Society of Chemistry. It has received multiple international awards, including the ALPSP Prize for Publishing Innovation in 2010.

ChemSpider builds on the collected data by adding additional properties, related information and links back to original data sources. ChemSpider offers text and structure searching to find compounds of interest and provides a range of services to improve this data by curation and annotation, and to integrate it with users’ applications.

Our mission

ChemSpider aims to support the chemical science community.

How we work

A small team of chemical information specialists manages ChemSpider’s day-to-day activities and works to add new compounds, remove errors and respond to user feedback. Our executive editor guides the editorial strategy for the site, and the team is supported by a product manager who oversees technical developments and site improvements. Our staff have extensive experience of both chemical data and practical chemistry.

Mark Archibald (Chemical Information Specialist)

Susan Richardson (Chemical Information Specialist)

Tamara Hughes (Executive Editor, Chemistry Data & Databases)

David Sharpe (Product Manager)

As part of the Royal Society of Chemistry, there are many people who contribute to the ongoing support and development of ChemSpider and many more who are involved with the Royal Society of Chemistry’s databases and cheminformatics resources. If you need to get in touch with us for any reason, please email us at chemspider@rsc.org.

ChemSpider also collaborates with a range of external partners who provide tools to enable us to enrich the data included in the compound records. These collaborations allow us to augment the data provided by the various data sources, including the addition of predicted physical properties and 3D structures. You can find out more about our current collaborators here.
