About Us

Adelan is a UK fuel cell technology company, working in global markets for clean air
The founders of Adelan invented the core microtubular solid oxide fuel cell (mSOFC)) technology in 1992. Adelan develops new clean, green energy market opportunities through direct sales and collaborative partnerships with industrial customers.

Core Technology

Adelan is a growing team of scientists and engineers with decades’ of technology experience from some of the UK’s biggest engineering firms.

Product Development

With over three decades working to reduce barriers to commercialisation and market risk, Adelan is the go-to group for mSOFC technology product development.

Continuous Improvement

Adelan develops, demonstrates and sells small, portable power products, gaining data on system design, manufacturing, lifetimes and progressive product improvement.

How can we help?

Core Technology

Scalable from small portable units, right up to grid-connected power stations, fuel cells represent a growing clean growth opportunity. Fuel cells are the cleanest possible technology for dependable and reliable electricity generation. With one of the longest running fuel cell R&D programmes in the world – and the longest running mSOFC programme – delivery of portable and mobile power solutions is Adelan’s core strength.

Crucially, Adelan’s quiet, compact and efficient fuel cells use commonly available infrastructure fuels such as LPG and act as a technological stepping stone towards the low-carbon and clean hydrogen economy of the future. Accelerating commercial product development through component and system cost reduction, Adelan develops and optimises mSOFC technology – from materials to design specifications.

Portable & Mobile

Adelan has the skills and capabilities to design, develop and implement micro-power solutions for a range of applications. Technical skills are focused on mSOFC systems, materials processing, SOFC testing and use of various fuels, including hydrocarbons.

With more than three decades’ experience in fuel cell material benefits, degradation analysis, system design, and fuel cell demonstration, Adelan has produced numerous demonstrators over the last 20+ years.

In 1998, development of the world’s first portable rapid starting SOFC fuelled by butane was one significant project. Described in the Journal of Power Sources, this project joins many others, such as the development of micro CHP demonstrator units in 1997 and 2000.

Remote Power

Microtubular solid oxide fuel cell (mSOFC) technology specific performance depends on the system and application, but there are general criteria that make Adelan mSOFCs especially competitive:

  • Operation on infrastructure hydrocarbon fuels such as LNG, as well as hydrogen
  • Efficient generation of heat and power
  • Quiet, low emission operation
  • Stackable and scalable from small light-weight, portable applications like battery chargers to combined heat and power generators
  • Progressive development on manufacturing costs and market performance indicators
  • Favourable key performance indicators for fuel cells on lifetime, energy density and cost

Market and Product Sales

Adelan’s key market is the rapidly expanding decentralised power market. This is a global, scalable market ripe for rapid, clean growth and driven by worldwide issues such as climate change.

The core business relates to integrating mSOFC technology into products for power and heat applications. Unmanned airborne vehicles, recreational vehicles, portable power, vehicles, remote power and micro combined heat and power (mCHP) have all emerged in recent years as strong growth markets for Adelan. Currently engaged in the R&D, sales, manufacture, demonstration and validation of portable and remote power solutions, Adelan projects demonstrate the low costs and utility of mSOFC technology for micro-power solutions while continuously proving – and improving – the core technology. Scale-up of manufacturing and maturing supply chains is the key to commercialising these markets.
