STEVE SOUDERS

Steve works at SpeedCurve on the interplay between performance and design. Steve has pioneered much of the work in the world of web performance. His book, High Performance Web Sites, explains his best practices for performance; it was #1 in Amazon's Computer and Internet bestsellers. His follow-up book, Even Faster Web Sites, provides performance tips for advanced web applications. Steve is the creator of many performance tools and services including YSlow, the HTTP Archive, Episodes, SpriteMe, ControlJS, and Browserscope. He taught CS193H: High Performance Web Sites at Stanford and co-founded the Firebug Working Group. He was co-chair of Velocity and now co-chairs performance.now(). Steve does many public speaking appearances.

Prior to SpeedCurve, Steve was Head Performance Engineer at Google, Chief Performance Yahoo!, and Chief Performance Officer at Fastly. Steve worked at several small to mid-sized startups including two companies he co-founded, Helix Systems and CoolSync. He also worked at General Magic, WhoWhere?, and Lycos. In the early 80's Steve worked at a few companies doing research in Artificial Intelligence focusing on machine learning.

Steve has a BS in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia and a MS in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University.

Steve's interests are varied. He's a member of U.S. Masters Swimming and competes in open water swims. He has played basketball with several NBA and WNBA players. He was a member of the Universal Studios Internet Task Force. He participated in setting a Guinness world record. He rebuilt a 90-year-old carriage house. He now resides in Hawaii paddling OC1 and OC6.
