Sapling was written for a writing workshop class in the spring and fall of 2016, and takes place in the same town as my other short story The Woods (though it's not necessary to read one to understand the other). It's a psychological horror story about a convenience store worker named Holden who commits a visceral act of revenge, and the strange tree that sprouts in his front yard after the fact.

Sapling contains depictions of psychological and physical abuse, trauma, gore, body horror, mention of attempted suicide, and vomiting.

I keep coming back to this short story to re-read and every time is just as beautiful and unsettling as the first! The imagery and pacing are phenomenal and I highly recommend this, especially for those seeking a cathartic sort of horror.

I truly loved this. The 'knife through a peach' paragraph was my favourite.

I have not stopped thinking about this story since I read it about a year ago. This is one of the few horror stories that has stuck with me, and I think it always will. Well worth a read.
