“This is a festive celebration for the University. I wish you all the best. Have far-reaching dreams and consistently achieve them,” said Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, in an opening address, welcoming new students and doctoral candidates during the inauguration of the 2024/2025 academic year. The event was held on 1st October in the Auditorium Maximum building on the UW main campus.

European meeting at the University of Warsaw

Over 300 guests, eight European universities, dozens of parallel sessions, workshops and meetings. The University of Warsaw hosted a three-day Annual Meeting of the 4EU+ Alliance, of which the UW is a member. On 26th September, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, took over the Alliance’s presidency from Prof. Elio Franzini, the Rector of the University of Milan.

Hall of Residence No. 7 “Sulimy” is opened

“We are delighted to open a new hall of residence at the University of Warsaw as part of an investment created for students and doctoral candidates, designed and created in collaboration with them,” Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, said. “Sulimy” – the new UW student hall of residence – is located in the Służewiec Campus and has 130 rooms which will accommodate more than 380 people.

UW Rector’s team for the 2024-2028 term

On 1st September, the term of a new Rector’s team was commenced. For the next four years, the University will be governed by Rector Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak and Vice-Rectors: Prof. Sambor Grucza, Prof. Ewa Krogulec, Prof. Zygmunt Lalak, Prof. Adam Niewiadomski and Prof. Maciej Raś.

“Mind your words” campaign

Choosing the right words is of particular importance in an academic discourse. On 25th September, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, launched the “Mind your words. Hate hurts” campaign. The initiative was prepared by UW students and the Academic Ombudsman.

Poland in Silicon Valley

On 11th September, representatives of the University of Warsaw and seven other Polish universities signed a collaboration agreement with Poland in Silicon Valley Center for Science, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship. Joint activities will include the promotion and publication of research results and university-led cooperation with industry.

Standard of the UW Student Hall of Residence No. 7

“Sulimy” is the University’s newest student hall of residence. The building meets the standards of modern residential construction with numerous environmentally friendly and energy-saving solutions, such as a ventilation heat pump, heat recovery from exhaust air and photovoltaic modules. The hall of residence is very popular with students and doctoral candidates.

Change in the UW ombudsman position

Following the resignation of Dr Anna Cybulko from the position of ombudsman at the University of Warsaw, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the Rector of the University of Warsaw, entrusted Magdalena Miksa, the previous Deputy Ombudsman for Student Affairs, with fulfilling the duties. Dr Anna Cybulko was the first university ombudsman in Poland, serving in this capacity for 13 years.

Internationalisation as a tool for development

“We have done a lot in recent years to raise our recognition in Europe and internationally. However, we are aware that the needs are greater. We are proud of the development of international cooperation in terms of student exchanges. We are building a European University. We are also winning more and more high-profile grants, including ERC grants,” Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, said.

One of the world’s top ten

In the Golden Hall of the Kazimierzowski Palace, the Rector of the University of Warsaw, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, together with the Vice-Rectors, Prof. Adam Niewiadomski and Prof. Maciej Raś met with Mikołaj Wolanin. The student from the UW’s Faculty of Law and Administration is the only representative of Poland, and the only European, recorded in the top ten of the Global Student Prize competition.

UW aid for flood victims

Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, and the University community express their solidarity with all the affected by the floods in southern Poland. The University authorities have launched a collection of donations for the flood victims.

Selenium-enriched foods

The University of Warsaw is coordinating an international project concerning the creation of a sustainable selenium-enriched functional food chain – PATHFOOD. The project is being implemented under the Horizon Europe programme. On 12th–13th September, a project kick-off meeting took place at the UW's Biological and Chemical Research Centre.

Welcome Days for international students

Every year, Welcome Point UW is organising an orientation event for new international long-term students. The meetings are held on 24th and 30th September at the UW Campus at Krakowskie Przedmieście.

Discoveries in Miedary

Dozens of well-preserved shark teeth, a complete skull with Nothosaurus’s teeth and bones of terrestrial reptiles from the Procolophon group are the most important discoveries of a team of scientists, which included researchers from the Faculty of Biology at the University of Warsaw, following the tenth excavation season in Miedary.

Super-precise spectrometer

Prof. Michał Parniak and Michał Lipka from the UW’s Faculty of Physics developed a quantum-inspired super-resolving spectrometer for short pulses of light. In the future the device can be miniaturized on a photonic chip and applied in optical and quantum networks as well as in spectroscopic studies of matter. The invention was presented by the researchers in “Optica”.

Balkan discoveries by archaeologists from UW

Archaeologists from the Antiquity of Southeastern Research Centre at the University of Warsaw have completed their excavation campaigns, which have been ongoing since May. This year’s fieldwork and documentation was carried out in the Balkans.
